Election and Movie Rental

Paul and I sent in our absentee ballots a few days ago. It was kind of a hassle getting our ballots in the first place (they never showed up even after several requests) but after some help from a non-profit group we got to send our votes in. Paul and I are registered in a traditionally Republican county. For the first time ever this county is split in half and could vote for a Democrat…we were both excited that our vote may actually count for something (never mind the whole Electoral College thing) in swaying the county one way or the other. So in honor of our civic duty fulfilled I made “I Voted” stickers. The stickers were Paul’s idea but I had the markers, it was our tribute to bipartisanship. We wore them around the house like big dorks.

This past week we also jumped a huge hurdle. After weeks of vocab review, Kanji memorization, and self-confidence boosts, Paul and I walked into a video rental place and applied for a membership card. Big surprise, there was no Japanese required. We just had to fill out our address (in English), name, and date of birth. Three minutes later, we had achieved affordable entertainment freedom. The first movie was “12 Monkeys”, it was weird and forgettable. We also rented the Japanese version of “The Grudge”. In general I hate horror movies and I’m not sure what motivated us to pick this as our intro to Japanese cinema. It was creepy, the story line was more detailed than the American version, and now I’m afraid our closet.

I love the "I voted" stickers. We have a short row of ours on the fridge just so we know that we really did vote.
