My toes are cold at all times now...

Devan-

This past week has been the start of the winter weather here. I think the temperatures are about the same here as they are in Oklahoma but because they don’t use insulation or turn on the heater until December, I’m going to say it’s WAY colder in Japan. There’s a belief here also that there should be lots of fresh air, even if that means opening the windows during a freezing rain. There are set dates when you can start to turn on your heater in the winter or the A/C in the summer. No matter how hot or cold it is you just have to suffer until those dates.

I have appreciated the large, easy to open windows in Japan. I even agree with the “lots of fresh air” approach but when it’s 40 degrees outside please don’t open that window. Today I was so cold; I turned on the heater (yes, before the December date). One of my teachers came in with her class and proceeded to open all of the windows while the heater was going. “Were you born in a barn!” instantly came to mind. For living in a rather conservation conscious country, I’ve seen my teachers do the goofiest stuff.

The person who held my position last year, Rebecca, is coming to visit the school on Friday. I’m excited for her to explain some stuff to me. It took me 6 months to figure out there is a school assembly every Tuesday morning in the gym. Honestly, I just thought everyone showed up at 8:30 instead of 7:30 on Tuesdays. It didn’t even occur to me that all 1200 of them are hiding from me in the gym. You know normally I don’t think of myself as an airhead…

Still no decision if we are staying another year. I think I changed my mind 8 times today.

Pros of leaving – Get back to school, get into a career one year sooner, get into a house sooner, I apparently don’t like other people’s children (difficult when you’re a teacher), get my dog back (even though I’m sure he’s been lost forever to my parents), get on with life, Taco Bell.

Pros of staying – Another year to travel around Japan, another year paying off school loans, don’t have to buy another car, don’t have to refurnish the 3rd home in two years of marriage

1200 kids hiding from you in the gym every Tuesday morning. I wonder how they all ever figured out that you wouldn't look for them there.
